Setting up an online store sounds complicated – but it doesn't have to be. I've been through this process myself, from start to finish, and in this guide, I'll tell you exactly how to create an online store with Shopify, step-by-step, without any coding skills.
📌 I set up my own online store with Shopify in 2024. The first product was for sale in less than a week. In this guide, I share everything I wish I had known before starting.
What do you need to create an online store?
Before you start, you only need three things:
- ✅ Product or service – what are you going to sell?
- ✅ Shopify account – free trial, no credit card needed at first
- ✅ A few hours of time – your store can be ready today
🪜 Step 1: Open a Shopify account for free
Go to Shopify and click "Start free trial". Enter your email address – that's all. You don't need a credit card during the trial period.
💡 Tip: Shopify offers a 3-day free trial + the first month for only €1. This is the best time to test it without risks.
🎨 Step 2: Choose a theme and create a design – AI does the heavy lifting
Shopify offers dozens of free themes. Choose one that suits you and customize the colors, fonts, and logo – or let Shopify Magic AI create the design for you.
Shopify Magic can:
- 🎨 Create a color scheme and style – just enter your brand description, and AI will suggest a suitable design
- ✨ Add visual effects – animations and hover effects without coding
- 🖼️ Generate banner images and hero images – professional images directly for your store
- 📝 Write homepage texts – headings, subheadings, and CTA buttons with AI
💡 My experience: I used Shopify Magic to build the entire homepage – colors, images, and texts. The result looked professional, even though I'm not a graphic designer. I easily saved €500–€1,000 in design costs.
📦 Step 3: Where to get products?
This is the question that stops many beginners. The answer: there are several options, and one of them requires no initial investment at all.
🏪 Own products or crafts
If you already have a product – crafts, photos, digital products, or services – this is the easiest starting point. You don't need inventory or suppliers.
🚚 Dropshipping – start without risks
In dropshipping, you don't buy products in advance for inventory – the supplier sends the product directly to your customer after the order. Shopify makes this especially easy thanks to its app store:
- ✅ No storage costs
- ✅ No initial investment in products
- ✅ You can test several products with low risk
Several dropshipping apps can be found in the Shopify app store:
- 🔵 DSers – the most popular AliExpress-based dropshipping app, free starter plan
- 🔵 Zendrop – faster delivery times, many EU suppliers
- 🔵 Printful / Printify – print-on-demand (t-shirts, mugs, posters)
💡 My experience: I started by testing a few products with dropshipping before investing in my own inventory. This way, I saw what really sells – without losing money on inventory that didn't move.
🏭 Domestic or European wholesalers
If you want shorter delivery times, look for domestic or European wholesalers. Many offer small businesses reseller opportunities without large minimum quantities.
💳 Step 4: Set up payment methods
Shopify Payments is the easiest way to accept payments in Finland. It supports all common payment methods:
- ✅ Visa, Mastercard, American Express
- ✅ Apple Pay and Google Pay
- ✅ Klarna (invoice and installment)
- ✅ PayPal
- ✅ Paytrail (Finnish online banks)
Go to Settings → Payments and activate Shopify Payments in minutes.
🚚 Step 5: Set up shipping
Set shipping zones, prices, and times. You can offer free shipping when a certain order amount is exceeded – this effectively increases the average order value.
- Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery
- Add shipping zones (e.g., Finland, EU)
- Set shipping prices or free shipping
🔍 Step 6: Optimize for search engines (SEO)
Shopify Magic automatically creates SEO-optimized meta descriptions and alt texts. In addition, it's worth writing blog articles regularly – they bring free organic traffic for months to come. Read more: how to SEO-optimize your online store with AI.
- Use keywords in product names and descriptions
- Ensure your site loads quickly
- Add alt texts to all images
💰 Step 7: Get your financial administration in order from the start
Many beginners forget financial administration – and regret it later. I recommend automating invoicing and accounting right from the start. Read more: online store financial administration with Holvi.
📣 Step 8: Market your online store – this is how I started
This is the stage where many beginners freeze. Marketing feels expensive and complicated – but it doesn't have to be. I started humbly, with a small budget, and learned along the way. Shopify Magic significantly helps with marketing – read more: Shopify Magic – AI as a marketing aid.
📌 My marketing budget for the first month was 0 euros. Still, I got my first customers – with just organic visibility and one Instagram post.
🌱 Start with free channels
- 📸 Instagram and TikTok – post product photos and short videos. Authentic content works better than polished ads.
- 💬 Facebook groups – find groups in your niche and participate in discussions.
- 🔍 Google (SEO) – blog articles bring free traffic for years.
- 📧 Email list – start collecting emails immediately. Shopify Email is free for small lists.
💰 When to start paid advertising?
Paid advertising (Meta Ads, Google Ads) should only be started when the store is functional, you have a few organic sales, and a budget of at least €5–€10/day.
⚠️ My mistake: I put money into ads too early – before I knew which product worked. I lost €80 without a single sale. Lesson: test organically first, then scale with ads.
🎯 Meta Ads – this is how I started
- Budget: €5/day – enough to collect data
- Audience: Broad targeting at first – let the algorithm find the right people
- Ad: A simple image ad or short video
- Goal: Select "Purchases" – not likes
💡 My first successful ad: "Delivery to Finland in 2–3 days. Order today." No fancy graphics – just a clear promise. It worked.
📧 Email marketing – the cheapest way to retain customers
Shopify Email is free for up to 10,000 emails per month – and Shopify Magic writes the messages for you.
- Set up an automatic welcome message for new subscribers
- Send an abandoned cart reminder – increases sales by 10–15%
- Campaigns for subscribers – they are already interested
🎯 Summary – creating an online store is not difficult
- ✅ Open a free Shopify account
- ✅ Choose a theme and create a design with AI
- ✅ Source products – your own, dropshipping, or wholesale
- ✅ Activate payment methods
- ✅ Set up shipping
