Shopify vs. Wix Experiences 2026 – Which E-commerce Platform Should You Choose?

Updated: April 2026

When I started looking for the best e-commerce platform for beginners, two names immediately came to mind: Shopify and Wix. I wasn't content with reading others' reviews – I tested both myself, with a real store, with real products. Here's what I learned.

📌 I've been running an online store on Shopify for over a year. Before that, I tried Wix for three months. The comparison isn't theoretical – it's lived.

Why did I compare these two specifically?

When I started building my online store in 2024, I had a clear goal: I wanted a platform that didn't require coding skills, supported AI features, and could scale with growth. Wix appealed with its affordable price and promises of ease of use. Shopify initially felt too big. But as I started testing – the picture quickly changed.

Which e-commerce platform is suitable for beginners?

💬 My Shopify Experience – Tool: Shopify Sidekick

Shopify's AI assistant Sidekick is something I didn't expect. It's not just a chatbot – it's a real business assistant that knows your store's data.

First experience: I asked Sidekick "what are my best-selling products?" – it immediately provided an analysis of sales data, suggested a campaign, and helped create a discount code. All in one conversation, without separate reports or Excel spreadsheets.

Wix simply doesn't have anything similar. Wix's AI helps write texts – Shopify's Sidekick helps manage the business.

"Sidekick is like hiring a part-time business analyst – for free."

Shopify – the best e-commerce platform for growth

Shopify is designed specifically for setting up and growing an online store. Setup is straightforward, and the AI assistant Sidekick is included right from the start.

📌 My experience – tool: Shopify Magic: My first product description was completed with Shopify Magic in 12 seconds. The text was better than my own version – sales-oriented, SEO-optimized, and suitable for the target audience. I edited it for maybe a minute. On Wix, the same process took 20 minutes and the result was weaker.

Shopify e-commerce features that impressed me:

  • 🤖 Sidekick AI assistant – analyzes sales, suggests campaigns, assists in decision-making
  • Shopify Magic – writes product descriptions, blog posts, and emails automatically
  • 📸 AI product images – generates and edits product images directly in the admin
  • 📦 Inventory management – multi-location, automatic alerts, forecasts
  • 💳 Shopify Payments – Klarna, Apple Pay, Paytrail – all in one
  • 🔄 Shopify Flow – automations without coding (order confirmations, customer segmentation, etc.)
  • 🛍️ 8,000+ apps – dropshipping, accounting, marketing, CRM

Wix – the easiest way to set up an online store quickly

Wix is perhaps the easiest e-commerce platform for beginners. Wix ADI builds an almost complete site in minutes.

📌 My experience – tool: Wix ADI: Wix's startup was very fast – the site looked good within an hour. But when I started adding products and wanted to modify the checkout process, I ran into limitations. Wix didn't scale with my needs – and there simply isn't a business assistant like Sidekick.

  • Wix AI Text Creator – automatically writes site texts
  • Wix Image Creator – generates AI images
  • Wix SEO Wiz – guides you through search engine optimization step by step
  • Wix Automations – automates marketing messages

AI features in comparison

1. AI Assistant

  • Shopify (Sidekick): Analyzes your sales data, suggests actions, helps create campaigns, and answers business questions. A true business assistant.
  • Wix: No similar business assistant. AI focuses mainly on writing texts.

2. Content Creation

  • Shopify (Magic): High-quality product descriptions, blog posts, and marketing messages directly in the admin – optimized for sales.
  • Wix: Wix AI Text Creator produces content for the entire site – a good basis, but requires more finishing.

3. Image Generation

  • Shopify: Editing product image backgrounds and generating new images directly on the platform – optimized for e-commerce use.
  • Wix: Wix Image Creator generates AI images and offers a large image bank.

4. Search Engine Optimization – Which is easier to optimize?

  • Shopify: AI-powered SEO suggestions and automatic technical optimization. Fast loading time is a critical factor.
  • Wix: Wix SEO Wiz provides good guidance, but Wix sites have historically loaded slower.

🔍 Shopify wins in search engine optimization – here's how it works in practice

Shopify is clearly easier to optimize for search engines than Wix – and the reason is simple: with Shopify, AI does much of the work for you. On Wix, SEO is more manual and technical performance is weaker.

Shopify's AI features for search engine optimization:

  • Shopify Magic – SEO-optimized product descriptions automatically: Type in the product name, and Magic creates an SEO-optimized description in seconds – the right keywords, the right structure, the right tone. On Wix, this requires manual work.
  • 🤖 Sidekick – SEO advisor directly in the admin: You can ask Sidekick "how do I improve the search visibility of my product pages?" and it will give concrete, tailored advice for your store. Wix has no equivalent.
  • Fast loading time – CDN automatically: Shopify uses a global CDN (Fastly) which automatically speeds up site loading. Page speed is an important Google ranking factor – Wix sites have historically been slower.
  • 📱 Mobile optimization ready: All Shopify themes are mobile-optimized by default. Google uses mobile-first indexing – this is critical for search visibility.
  • 📝 Automatic metadata and URL structure: Shopify automatically creates clean URLs, canonical tags, and a sitemap.xml file. Wix's URL structure has historically been weaker for SEO.
  • 📊 Structured data (schema markup) ready: Shopify automatically adds Product Schema markup to product pages, which appear in Google searches as rich snippet results (stars, price, availability). This also improves visibility in AI searches.

🎯 Summary: With Shopify, search engine optimization is largely automated – AI writes the texts, CDN speeds up the page, schema markup is ready, and Sidekick advises. On Wix, each of these requires manual work or separate applications.

5. Automation and Marketing

  • Shopify (Flow): Advanced automations without coding – order confirmations, customer segmentation, inventory alerts, and sales data analysis.
  • Wix: Wix Automations handles basic automations well – sufficient for a smaller store.

💡 My conclusion: Wix saved time initially. Shopify saves time every week – and Sidekick truly makes business management easier. If AI is a tool for you – not just a startup aid – Shopify is clearly the better choice.

💰 Price Comparison – Shopify vs. Wix 2026

This is a question that interests every aspiring online merchant. I compared both – here's the truth.

Shopify – Prices 2026

Plan Monthly Billing Annual Billing Suitable For
Basic ~39 €/month ~29 €/month Beginners
Grow ~105 €/month ~79 €/month Growing businesses
Advanced ~399 €/month ~299 €/month Larger businesses

💡 Shopify offers a free 3-day trial + the first month for only 1 €. With annual billing, you save ~25%.

Wix – Prices 2026

Plan Monthly Billing Annual Billing Suitable For
Business Basic ~29 €/month ~17 €/month Small stores
Business Unlimited ~38 €/month ~25 €/month Growing stores
Business VIP ~62 €/month ~35 €/month Larger stores

💡 Wix is cheaper monthly – but remember to include potential add-ons.

📌 My experience with pricing: I initially paid less for Wix, but needed several paid add-ons to get everything working. With Shopify, the basic features were sufficient for a long time – Sidekick, Shopify Magic, and Flow are all included without extra charge.

💳 Payment Methods – Which one better supports a Finnish online merchant?

Shopify supports a wider range of payment methods than Wix – especially for a Finnish online merchant, this is a significant advantage.

Payment Method Shopify Wix
Visa / Mastercard ✅ Shopify Payments ✅ Wix Payments
Apple Pay / Google Pay ✅ Built-in ✅ Built-in
PayPal ✅ Native integration ✅ Native integration
Klarna ✅ Directly in Shopify Payments ⚠️ Via third party
Invoice / Installments ✅ Klarna, Shop Pay Installments ⚠️ Limited support
Bank Transfer / Online Banking ✅ E.g., Paytrail integration ⚠️ Limited
Transaction fee (own gateway) ⚠️ 0.5–2 % (if not Shopify Payments) ✅ No separate transaction fee
Availability in Finland ✅ Available ⚠️ Limited availability

📌 My experience: Shopify Payments worked smoothly in Finland – Klarna, card payments, and Apple Pay activated in minutes. With Wix, I had to use third-party payment providers, which meant additional costs and more hassle.

The Verdict – Which E-commerce Platform to Choose in 2026?

Both platforms genuinely leverage AI. Wix, on the other hand, is excellent if you want to publish a company website quickly and affordably.
